Break the Silence

This silence
is overwhelming,
deafening as it screams through the room.

With us it has always been silence
so loud it demands notice.
We never argue,
raise our voices in anger,
so how can I know
if you are mad

It’s a guessing game.

I cannot give in,
let you win,
step across the void,
risking everything.

If I were wise
I would concede.
Stop wasting precious moments of time,
but pride does not allow it,
refuses stubbornly,
adamantly,
to permit me to break the silence
we uphold as we shift from room to room
avoiding each other’s eyes.

Sometimes I wonder
if this silent battle
is all of my own imagining.

Some battle I’ve begun
in my head.

Do you even know we are at war?
